The Pet Travel Scheme - Taking
your pet Abroad?

About the PeTS Scheme
- The Pet Travel Scheme (PeTS) allows cats and dogs over three months of age
to enter the UK from certain qualifying countries without the need for
quarantine, providing they meet certain stringent requirements. Prepare
early, it will take approximately seven months before your pet will be ready
to participate in the scheme.
- Your pet must be sufficiently healthy to withstand the intended journey,
or the carrier has an obligation to refuse transport. Check carefully with
the import requirements of your destination and any countries that you may
pass through. A health certificate is required to enter some countries; this
will have to be completed by an approved veterinary surgeon at a specified
time before travel.
The Conditions of the Scheme
Your pet must conform to all the conditions
outlined below. If you require further information, then contact the clinic on
(020) 7223 7003 or
theclinic@westsidevets.co.uk (E-mail may take up to 7 days for a reply)
- A microchip must be implanted, before rabies vaccination, giving your
puppy a permanent and unique identity number.
- Vaccination against rabies is required with an approved vaccine, (from 12
weeks of age).
- A blood test must be taken one month after vaccination. This will be
tested at an approved laboratory to ensure your pet has responded to the
vaccine. If your pet does not reach the required level, it can be
re-vaccinated and tested again.
- Your pet cannot enter or re-enter the UK from abroad until six months
after a successful blood test was taken.
- A Pets Passport is required, signed by a Veterinary Surgeon appointed
DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs). This confirms that
the above conditions have been met.
- Treatment against ticks and tapeworms is necessary with approved products,
24-48 hours before re-entering the UK. A section of your Pet Passport will be
completed by a veterinary surgeon to confirm that the treatment has been done.
- A declaration is required, signed by the owner, to state that the pet has
not been outside any of the qualifying countries in the six months before
re-entering the UK.
Keeping your European Union Pets Pasport Valid
- Once your pet has had a valid passport issued, it is important to have
rabies vaccinations renewed as directed by your Veterinary Clinic / Surgeon.
Ensuring your pets rabies boosters are kept up to date enables the passport to
be updated without further blood tests
